“We must develop the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.” Martin Luther King
For the past few weeks, I have thought a lot about forgiveness. What does it mean to be forgiven? How does forgiveness help the person doing the forgiving? Finally, how does one come to the decision to forgive another person? I believe there is so much in the act of letting go of hurt feelings and letting bygones be bygones. Each person deals with this basic human act in their own way. There are a lot of varying answers for these questions, which could be debated, but I want to discuss the act in and of itself.
Forgiveness lends itself into validation. A wrong has been done. There is validation in the act to admitting the wrong. A person is letting that act go (but not forgotten) by asking for forgiveness. See, it starts to haunt a person, if they themself don’t have the opportunity to ask for forgiveness. In the end, it’s for both parties involved.
Even in a virtual world, I have seen many people struggle with the act of forgiving. I am no stranger with making a mistake. I believe that even some come to this complex wonderful world to deal with inner demons, which collide with others. Some may not even know of the personal struggles that someone grapples with on a daily basis. In the end, some one makes a mistake and has to either do the forgiving or move past it–while learning a valuable lesson.
In my second life, I had one defining moment. I interrupted the peace. A mistake was made. It left me forever changed. I have been the criminal. I have been the culprit. I also interrupted my own peace and haven in second life–not once but twice. My personal demons were on the door step. And here I sit contemplating forgiveness. Because in the end, I have to forgive myself to move forward. I also have to find my place again here. One moment can change everything sometimes, so be careful with your words and actions.
If you do make a mistake that can’t be forgiven by another, you may have to learn to forgive yourself. Forgiving yourself is also loving yourself enough to admit that you have evil and good within you, but it also gives you the ability to move forward. I’m still learning how to do this myself.
So be good to one another.
